Lorna Russell: Recent Works

Art Placement is delighted to present this exhibition of recent works in oil and watercolour by beloved Saskatchewan artist, Lorna Russell. Russell has been active since the 1960s, painting and drawing the Saskatchewan landscape for more than 50 years. She has exhibited extensively, and her works can be found in corporate, public, and private collections throughout Canada.

Lorna Russell's works are beloved by collector's near and far for their beautiful, rich colour and expressionistic style. At the age of 87, she is still actively painting! The exhibition brings together select works from the past decade, with a strong focus on more than a dozen brand new oil and watercolour paintings completed within the last two years. The new oil paintings feature the vivid, intense colours and wispy, gestural brushstrokes that have become the signatures of her recent style. The watercolours present similarly vivid colours applied in discrete, organic shapes with glimpses of the white paper left visible between. This technique gives the watercolours a light airiness as well as a rich intensity, a difficult balance to achieve. Stylistically, they also hearken back to Russell's oil glaze paintings of the 1970s, which have been much beloved by collectors.

Lorna Russell has contributed to the arts in the city and province for more than half a century as an artist as well as an educator and mentor. Her work has always remained intimately connected to place, expressing a deep appreciation and wonder for the natural world. Celebrating the beauty of the Saskatchewan landscape, her paintings offer a unique and personal vision. We are delighted to present them, and to celebrate the work and achievements of such a significant, Saskatchewan artist.

Exhibition Unveiling

Saturday, November 14th

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to open the exhibition with a traditional reception and, unfortunately, Lorna Russell will not be able to take part in the meet-and-greet format that has become a popular alternative. For those interested in having a first look at these latest works, however, we are pleased to host an informal come-and-go social for viewing and conversation on Saturday, November 14th, from 1PM to 4PM. Drop-in visitors are welcome, though we will be limiting the number of people in the space at any one time; please be advised that you may have to wait outside if we are at capacity when you arrive. Alternatively, we will be taking appointments for those who are interested in doing so. Please call 306-664-3385 ext. 2 during regular hours or email gallery@artplacement.com to reserve your time to view the exhibition on opening day. Masks are encouraged and appreciated, but not mandatory.
